10 Games 10 Weeks

Week 5: Gun-Scythe

This week, we have a silly, physics-based action game about wielding a scythe that’s also a gun!

Now, obviously this idea is heavily inspired by the show RWBY, where the main character uses a similar weapon. In the show, she uses the recoil of the gun to help her move around, and I thought it would be pretty amusing to take that concept and make it a bit… sillier. Hence, whenever you fire your gun, your character gets launched into the distance!

The development process for this game was pretty interesting, as most of the first day was spent struggling to get the physics system in Unreal Engine to behave. It also contains a lot of animation, so I’m grateful I spent the time to learn how to do it properly back in Week 2.

The visual aesthetic wasn’t preplanned, but rather came about when I decided that the enemies would be robots. Once that decision was made, I fully leaned into a Tron/Cyberpunk look, which is also fairly easy to make. The small number of colors also make the game very readable and consistent, which really helps with presentation.

My only other complaint this week is that my laptop apparently can’t fully handle playing the game and recording it at the same time, so a lot of the footage I captured is rather low quality. I don’t really have a solution for that at the moment though.

All in all, I’m happy with the result. See you next week!
